Louisiana Genealogy - Grant Parish

Grant Parish, Louisiana is in Central Louisiana (colloquially known as Cenla), a world away from New Orleans in more ways than one. The local newspaper I subscribe to is The Chronicle, published weekly in Colfax, Louisiana.
Since The Chronicle is not online, I have received permission to reprint the obituaries for my fellow genealogy devotees. I've been saving them for a few years, so I'll be posting them as time permits.

Please let me know if you find them useful by leaving a comment. The comment section is at the end of each post (each different newspaper issue date.)

Or e-mail me: redbirdridge07(a)gmail.com.

About the Obituaries

Obituaries are listed in alphabetical order in the following Index. Scroll through the list and then use ctrl F to find a specific obit, or use the SEARCH BOX below.

The text in these obituaries is exactly as appeared in The Chronicle, Colfax, Louisiana, except for obvious typographical errors.

Names are spelled as they appeared in the newspaper. If you'd like to make a correction, please leave a comment, or send me an e-mail. (Comments come directly to me. Your e-mail is not posted.) I'd be happy to hear from you.

----------------------------------------

Note: The Google search box will only show you what is on the site. It does not link to the obituaries. You still have to use the "Find" function on your keyboard to get to the obituary. Copy and Paste the entire name from the index into the "Find" box.

I apologize for this cumbersome method, but it will have to do for now.

Ann

Blackburn, Dorothy Marie Walker

Funeral services for Dorothy Marie Walker Blackburn were held Tuesday, August 28 in the Chapel of Hixson Brothers Funeral Home, Pineville with Reverend Charles Hutzler, her pastor for more than 18 years, officiating. Lawrence Bynog delivered the eulogy and Chaplain Jason Woodard offered prayer. John Frank Reeves performed the singing of two songs, “I Can Only Imagine,” and “I come to the Garden.” Interment was in Dry Prong Cemetery under the direction of Hixson Brothers Funeral Home, Pineville.

Dorothy Marie Walker Blackburn, 91, of Alexandria (formerly a resident of Bentley and Williana Community) died Sunday, August 26, 2007 in her residence.

She was born in Crystal City, Texas on May 16, 1916 to Charles and Sue Hall Walker. Her story is of a life well lived.

She graduated from Bossier High School in 1913. In school she was active in sports and played on the basketball team. She married her childhood sweetheart, Ruben Ellis Blackburn. They were married for 49 years and had one child, Ruth Carolyn.

She became a licensed beautician in Hobbs, New Mexico. Later, a life-long passion and hobby of collecting dolls blossomed into a business. She opened the Land of Enchantment Doll House in Hobbs, N.M. The business expanded to include the repair of dolls. Besides being known as the “Doll Lady,” her home gardens and flowerbeds flourished. She and her family eventually moved to Bentley, La., where she opened up “Dorothy’s Doll Hospital.”

In Grant Parish, she became an avid gardener and was active in several Garden Clubs. Her knowledge of horticulture became renowned in Grant Parish. A woman of varied talents and interests, Dorothy exuded a creative flair. She sold Tri-chem liquid embroidery for years, and her paintings won several first-place ribbons at area parish fairs. She enjoyed sewing and would make rag dolls, hand-stitched quilts, and tailor-made clothes.

She worked as a postal clerk in Bentley at the U. S. Post Office for several years. She owned and operated Blackburn’s Mini Market, a small old-fashioned country store, in Bentley for one year. In addition, she delivered newspapers for several routes spanning decades in New Mexico and Louisiana.

For more than 50 years, she was an active member in Home Maker’s Club in Texas, New Mexico, and Louisiana. Some of her special projects included making quilts for veterans and orphans. She also made teddy bears to donate to local police departments to give to children in crisis situations. She was a member of Patience Quilters, the Central Louisiana Doll Club, the Williana Night Lights and a member of Alpine First Baptist Church in Tioga La. For several years, she served as a Bentley community correspondent for the Colfax Chronicle and a free-lance writer for the Red River Journal. In addition she volunteered as a “Pink Lady” Women’s Auxiliary helper at Rapides Hospital in Alexandria for more than 10 years.

She loved to cook, loved to visit doll shops and museums, and enjoyed festivals, but was happiest outside in her beautiful gardens. An enchanting storyteller, she held audiences captive with tales of her childhood or her early married years with life on a farm in Texas. The tapestry of Dorothy’s life is interwoven with laughter and love intertwined with a close-knit family. A witty conversationalist, she liked the challenge of a game of “42.” She loved fishing and camping trips with her husband. To her family and friends, she was known as a “walking encyclopedia” of a vast amount of knowledge on a variety of subjects. And if she was not familiar with a topic, she would be the first to “look it up” so everyone around her could know new facts.

She enjoyed outdoor picnics and cookouts, loved animals, and always had a twinkle in her eyes and an easy smile. She was a long-time resident of Bentley and Williana, where she lived in her two-story log house. Recently she made a new home in Alexandria.
